An electrocardiogram, also called an ECG or EKG, records the heart's electrical activity. Small electrodes placed on the skin detect the signals while you rest. The test records electrical activity; it does not send electricity into your body.
This appointment is for a resting ECG. It is different from an exercise stress test or a Holter monitor that records heart activity over a longer period.
Choose this appointment if a physician has requested a resting ECG and you have a valid medical requisition. The test may form part of an assessment, monitoring of an existing condition or another investigation chosen by your physician.
If you are unsure whether you need an ECG, start with a medical consultation rather than selecting a test yourself.
This is a scheduled testing service. It is not an emergency assessment.
Your requisition identifies the test requested and the physician responsible for receiving the result. Having the request ready helps the clinic book the correct service and send the tracing to the right professional.
The referring physician may practise at Bina or another clinic. An outside request does not automatically require an additional Bina consultation before the ECG.
Book the ECG appointment when you already have a valid request for a resting electrocardiogram.
If you do not have a requisition, consult your own doctor or book a separate medical consultation at Bina. The physician will assess your situation and decide whether an ECG or another investigation is appropriate.

After the ECG, the tracing is faxed to the referring physician for evaluation. That physician reviews it in the context of your medical history and the reason for testing, explains the result and determines the next steps.
If a Bina physician did not request your ECG, do not assume that a Bina physician will automatically review it. Confirm your follow-up arrangements with the referring physician.

A resting ECG generally requires little preparation. Access to your chest is needed to place the electrodes correctly. Choose clothing that is easy to remove or open and follow any specific instructions from your referring physician.
