An electrocardiogram, abbreviated as ECG or EKG, is a non-invasive test that records the heart’s electrical activity. The ECG machine records the electrical signals that coordinate each heartbeat. It does not send electricity into the body.
A physician may request an ECG as part of an assessment involving palpitations, an irregular pulse, dizziness, fainting, chest symptoms, medication monitoring, preoperative evaluation, an established heart condition or another clinical reason.
A valid medical requisition is required for Bina’s ECG service. The requisition confirms that a qualified healthcare professional has ordered the test and identifies the professional responsible for receiving and reviewing the result.
If you do not have a requisition, book a separate Doctor Visit so a physician can assess your concern and determine whether an ECG or another investigation is appropriate. The consultation and ECG are separately billed.
After the ECG is completed, the tracing is faxed to the ordering physician. That physician is responsible for reviewing the recording in the context of the reason for testing, explaining the result and determining the appropriate next step.
If a physician at Bina did not order the ECG, do not assume that a Bina physician will automatically receive or review the result. Confirm which healthcare professional will receive the tracing and how you should obtain follow-up. If you require interpretation by a Bina physician, a separate medical consultation and additional fee may apply.
Before the appointment:
A resting ECG generally does not require fasting or major preparation. Access to the chest is required for correct electrode placement. Do not stop medication, restrict food or change your normal routine unless the ordering professional has specifically given you different instructions.
