Spirometry is a breathing test that measures the amount of air you can blow out and how quickly you can exhale. It is one type of lung function test. Bina Medical Clinic offers screening spirometry and pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry using the Spirobank II SMART spirometer.
During testing, you take a deep breath and blow through a mouthpiece as instructed. You repeat the breathing manoeuvre so the testing team can obtain consistent measurements. These measurements help a healthcare professional assess your breathing alongside your symptoms, medical history and other findings.
Spirometry is for patients whose healthcare professional has requested breathing measurements. It may be used to investigate persistent cough, wheezing or shortness of breath, or to help assess and monitor asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Symptoms alone do not tell you which test you need. If you have not yet been assessed or do not have a requisition, speak with a healthcare professional before booking a test.

Screening spirometry records baseline breathing measurements. You breathe into a spirometer under the testing team's guidance, repeating the manoeuvre to obtain consistent results. This appointment does not include repeating the test after a bronchodilator.
The measurements provide information for a healthcare professional's assessment. They may also be compared with previous measurements when monitoring a respiratory condition. A test result alone does not explain every cause of a breathing symptom.

If the requisition requests testing before and after a bronchodilator, choose the pre- and post-bronchodilator appointment instead. If it requests complete PFT or a methacholine challenge test, Bina does not provide the requested test.
The measurements need clinical interpretation. If you need a Bina physician to assess your symptoms or interpret the measurements, a separate medical consultation may be required and billed separately. Ask before booking who will review your results and whether you need a follow-up appointment.
This test compares your breathing measurements before and after a bronchodilator, a medication that helps open the airways. The comparison helps the reviewing healthcare professional assess whether your airflow changes after the medication.

Choose this appointment when your healthcare professional has specifically requested pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry. It may form part of an assessment for suspected asthma or airflow obstruction, or respiratory follow-up when this comparison is needed.
This appointment is different from a methacholine challenge test. If your requisition requests methacholine testing or complete pulmonary function testing, contact the prescribing healthcare professional to arrange the appropriate investigation elsewhere.
The test does not include automatic medical follow-up. If you need a Bina physician to review the measurements or discuss treatment, a separate medical consultation may be required and billed separately.
Bina does not perform complete pulmonary function testing (complete PFT) or methacholine challenge tests. The available services are screening spirometry and pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry.
Complete pulmonary function testing is a broader assessment that can include measurements of lung volumes and gas transfer in addition to spirometry. Gas-transfer testing, sometimes called a diffusion test or DLCO, examines how gas moves from the lungs into the blood. Bina's two spirometry appointments do not provide this complete assessment.
A methacholine challenge test evaluates airway responsiveness and may be requested when investigating possible asthma. It uses a different testing approach from pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry. These appointments are not interchangeable.
Read this section before booking if your requisition mentions complete PFT, methacholine, bronchoprovocation, lung-volume testing or DLCO. Contact the clinic to check the requested test rather than assuming that any appointment labelled “lung function test” includes it.
If complete PFT or methacholine testing has been requested, ask the prescribing healthcare professional where to arrange it, such as an appropriate hospital or specialized respiratory laboratory. Do not book Bina's spirometry appointment as a substitute.
