Spirometry is a breathing test that records the volume and speed of air exhaled from the lungs. During the test, you take a full breath and then blow into the spirometer as forcefully and completely as possible. The manoeuvre is usually repeated so the nursing team can obtain consistent measurements. Spirometry results must be considered alongside symptoms, medical history, examination and other investigations
Screening spirometry may be used to:
Choose screening spirometry when baseline lung-function measurements have been requested. Screening spirometry does not include a bronchodilator comparison. If the purpose is to measure whether airflow changes after using a bronchodilator, choose the pre- and post-bronchodilator appointment.
Medical diagnosis, treatment and physician interpretation are separately booked services.

Choose this option when testing before and after a bronchodilator has been requested. Baseline spirometry is completed first. After the bronchodilator is used according to the clinic’s testing protocol, the breathing measurements are repeated. Comparing the two sets of measurements helps the reviewing healthcare professional determine whether airflow changed following the bronchodilator.
A change after the bronchodilator does not establish a diagnosis on its own. Results must be interpreted in the context of symptoms, health history, medication use and other clinical findings.

Spirometry produces measurements that a qualified healthcare professional must interpret alongside your symptoms, medical history and reason for testing. The screening appointment itself does not provide a medical diagnosis.
