The biopsy technique is selected according to the lesion and the medical information required. It is not selected solely according to patient preference. A punch biopsy may require closure of the biopsy site, depending on the sample and location. A shave biopsy may be selected for an appropriate superficial lesion. Communication of the pathology result, further treatment or referral may require a separate follow-up appointment.
